GTHLA Team Agreements

GTHLA Team Membership Expectations

1. The Team and all its participating players agree to adhere to all the GTHLA and Hockey Canada rules.

2. We were founded on the ideals of sportsmanship, fun, safety, camaraderie, community, collaboration, imagination, creativity, artistic expression, social involvement/awareness/activism, inclusion, fairness, communication, responsibility, empathy and participation and each team agrees to adhere and promote these values.

3. Fair Play: All teams agree to take responsibility for their players’ actions. It is everyone’s prerogative to establish and maintain a fun, safe, equitable and cooperative environment on the ice. All teams agree to extend common respect to everyone on the ice. The team agrees to enforce strong sportsmanship and communication while promoting the values and mission of the league.

League officials are provided on and off the ice for guidance. The officials, including the Fair Play Committee, will provide a minimum acceptable guideline in assisting teams and players to remain within the values and mission of the league.

We realize that on-ice confrontations always start from the actions of an opposing player. It is important to acknowledge that offences are often accidental, but no matter what, retaliation is even more inexcusable and will escalate the situation. Referees are present to supervise games, and it is important to accept that they cannot see the entire surface of play and may not be able to witness every infraction. A sincere apology after fouling someone is necessary, especially if the referees did not see the foul. It should be no different then a pick-up game without referees.

If there are any issues with missed infractions or consistent unsportsmanlike behaviour from specific opposing players, players agree to indicate it to their captain, who can then discuss it further with the referees and/or opposing captains during the game. After the game, the team can discuss issues with league officials and opposing team captains and managers to increase understanding within the framework of the league’s values and mission. Teams are requested to file a game report after every game to the Fair Play Committee rating their opponent’s sportsmanship. Finally, every team agrees to demand discipline from their own players before they request more from others.

Teams are encouraged to file game reports 24 hours after each game to gamereports@hockeyaa.net

4. Captains: Teams must have identifiable captains and alternate captains during the game in order for the teams and officials to communicate more effectively.

5. Scheduling: All Toronto teams must be prepared to play in Greater Toronto on Monday to Thursday 7PM to 10PM; Friday 7PM to 11PM; Saturday 11AM to 11PM and Sunday 11AM to 10PM. Games out of Toronto can be scheduled on Saturday and Sunday from 12PM to 8PM for Toronto based teams. Toronto based teams must be prepared to travel up to twice during a season to games out of the Greater Toronto area and within 150 km. Each team is responsible to give the league at least a two month notice if they are unavailable to play at any specific time within the preceding times. The league’s goal is to have the schedule locked 2 months ahead. Playoffs are not an exception, in terms of giving notice on a team’s unavailability. There is potential for 2 games on a weekend when the schedule dictates it as a necessity. Exhibition games that are scheduled after the league’s playoffs have started may get bumped to a later date to accommodate the playoff schedule. All teams are responsible to keeping up to date with the league’s schedule and ensuring that their team shows up for their scheduled games.

5. Social Events: Each team must host a social event for the benefit of the league’s membership before the season ends.

6. General Managers Meetings: Each team must have at least one representative at each of the three General Managers meetings during the year.

7. Additional Ice-Time: Teams can book additional one hour and one and a half hour exhibition games at anytime. They can also book ice-time for their own pick-up games or practices. Sparkles Hockey Academy is also available for single or a series of practice(s) with instruction.

One hour Exhibition Game $170 + GST = $180.20

One and a Half Hour Exhibition Game $225 + GST = $238.50

One hour of ice-time for a team to use at their own discretion $190 + GST = $201.40

Practice with Sparkles Hockey Academy Instruction TBA

8. General Information: The team agrees to collaborate through assisting the league in administration work and fundraising and to always work towards benefiting the league as a whole and never to exploit the league and its community for the benefit of an individual, team or a group, unless the league approves (e.g. helping raise some financial assistance for a member who has lost his/her main source of income due to an accidental hockey injury). All teams agree to share their ideas, imagination and creativity. By doing this we hope to build collaboration, cooperation and strengthen community around our values.

9. Volunteering: The league is dependent on volunteer help in completing numerous tasks. Team fees will be discounted the following season for volunteer work. Excessive individual volunteer work will receive honorariums. All volunteer information is on the league website.

For Comprehensive and Semi-Comprehensive Members:

10. Rosters: Comprehensive and Semi-Comprehensive Team Members must submit their initial team rosters before Saturday, October 13, 2007. Only players on this roster are eligible to be designated “Exempt Players” for the playoffs. Notification and a written explanation of “Exempted Players” on a team’s roster have to be submitted to the league prior to two weeks before the start of the playoffs. Team’s final playoff rosters have to be submitted to the league one week before the playoffs start. All roster correspondence to the league must be done through the gthlamembership@hockeyaa.net email address. Details on roster rules (rule #9) are on the website

10. Playoff Byes: If a team wants to wave their right for a bye past the first round of the playoffs, they must inform the league prior to two weeks before the playoffs begin through gthlamembership@hockeyaa.net

11. Travel During Playoffs: Any Toronto based team that plays an out of Toronto based team for the playoffs must be prepared to travel to the opponent’s home rink if a game is scheduled for there.

primer for new teams

Primer for new teams wanting to participate in the Good Times Hockey League of the Arts

(A member of the Hockey Association of the Arts)

It is our priority to encourage the ideals we were founded on of sportsmanship, fun, safety, camaraderie, collaboration, cooperation, community, creativity, imagination, artistic expression, social involvement/awareness/activism, inclusion, fairness, communication, responsibility, empathy and participation among our members. Every team and player must promote them. We expect players and teams to take responsibility for their actions on the ice. We expect a common respect for everyone on the ice. We realize that on-ice confrontations always start from the actions of an opposing player. It is important to acknowledge that offenses are often accidental, but no matter what, retaliation is even more inexcusable and will often escalate the situation. A sincere apology after fouling someone is necessary.

Referees are present to supervise official games, and it is important to accept that they cannot see the entire surface of play and may not be able to witness every infraction. Players’ interaction should be no different in an official game then in a pick-up game without referees.

The team is the primary authority in maintaining discipline and promoting these ideals amongst its players. Specifically, we feel fighting, roughing, verbal abuse and harmful stick-work are not part of the game. We do not have any patience for it and it is not welcome. It is the team’s responsibility to filter out all of these unacceptable elements by not allowing certain players to play and preventing any on-ice confrontations.

If there are any issues with missed infractions or consistent unsportsmanlike behaviour from specific opposing players, it must be indicated to your own captain, who can then discuss it further with the referees and/or opposing captains during the game. After the game, the team can discuss issues with league officials and opposing team captains and managers to increase understanding within the framework of the league’s values and mission. Finally, every team must demand discipline from their own players before they request more from others.

You can read all the GTHLA rules on our website, www.goodtimes.exclaimhockey.ca. Our rules include some of the following stipulations:

1. We play without the centre red line. Automatic Icing is called from behind the blue line.

2. There is no intentional body contact permitted.

3. If a team is short-handed on the ice due to a penalty, they can only substitute when the puck is in play or the clock is stopped.

4. Half or full visors or cages are mandatory

5. Each Player is only permitted to receive up to 4 minutes in penalties in a game (10 minute misconducts are equivalent to a 2 minute penalty for the purpose of this rule). If they receive more, they are ejected from the game and will be reviewed to assess whether more discipline is warranted. If a player is ejected for too many minor penalties, the opposing team will be rewarded a penalty shot instead of the team with the infraction having a player serve the 2 minute penalty in the penalty box.

6. If a team gets more than 30 minutes of penalties in one game, the team is suspended indefinitely from any GTHLA play. If the opposing team in that game has less than half the team penalties of the team with more than 30 minutes of penalties, the opposing team will only have a 1/3 of their team penalty minutes from that game count toward their qualification requirements.

2008 Exclaim! Hockey Summit of the Arts Participation Requirements

The Exclaim! Hockey Summit of the Arts is the annual tournament and festival for the membership of the HAA. To be eligible to participate in the event, hockey teams within a 150 km radius of Toronto must be members of the Good Times Hockey League of the Arts.

Teams that are outside of a 150 km radius of Toronto, but are within 150 km radius of Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Peterborough, Guelph, St. Catharines, London, Sudbury, Edmonton or Vancouver must play at least 1 exhibition game with a HAA team from the city or cities they’re close to before they apply .

Joining the Good Times Hockey League of the Arts

The league is focused in south central Ontario, spanning from Peterborough to Guelph to St. Catharines, including Toronto. We welcome any team that shares our ideals and is based in this vicinity. A team can apply to become a member or simply just enjoy playing single exhibition games at a time. Here are the steps to go through to play...

Step 1: Contact us to set up an exhibition game against one of our member teams or other teams participating in our scheduling. Please contact us through
gthlamembership@hockeyaa.net. Single exhibition games cost $180 + GST ($190.80), we must receive payment before we can schedule. Payment details are below. Games are generally scheduled 2 months ahead.

Teams who don’t get any penalties in their first game with us are encouraged to book another 3 exhibition games. Teams who only get one penalty in their first two games with us are encouraged to book another 2 exhibition games. Teams who surpass these limits can only book single exhibition games and must complete each game in good standing before continuing to book another game.

Step 2: After a team has completed 4 single exhibition games without any incidents, including a maximum of 20 minutes in team penalties over their last 4 games, they are invited to apply to join the league. To apply to join, the team must play another four exhibition games without incident, including a maximum of 20 minutes in team penalties, and exemplify why their team would be a positive addition to our membership.

Step 3: After a team has successfully completed their application to join they are invited to become a member of the league as an Exhibition Team Member. You can only register after June and before February.

Step 4: After a team has completed a season as an Exhibition Team Member with a maximum of 40 team penalty minutes (in their last 8 games) and has attended all the General Managers' meetings over the season, they are invited to join the league as a Comprehensive Member.

Notes from 1st meeting:

Hey Folks,

Thanks to those who made it out on Friday. Attached are the documents that we handed out at the meeting. They were the root of our discussion, however we weren’t able to cover everything. These are the major points I got out of the discussion. Please reply to everyone if you can add further points from our discussion that I haven’t touched upon.

  1. Ray will help coordinate the day to day tasks that are needed to progress this aspect of the league, Director of Admissions or Membership, if you will.

  1. A part of being a member of the league is helping out in running it. We will put together a list of tasks that need to be done, how much time is needed to accomplish the task and coordinate among the league members getting the tasks done. At various points we’ll need to establish whether a task can be handled by membership volunteerism or if we need to pay someone to get the task done. We’ll sort these guidelines out as we progress. We will keep track of who is doing what so all the membership can be aware of what is being accomplished and who is doing it.

  1. We’ll have 2 types of team membership next year: Full League Member and Exhibition Member. Details are in the “Primer” attachment. It needs more work, but feel free to comment on what’s written already.

  1. Individuals can get involved through our open pick-up games, Intermingle league circuit and by playing with the Wanderers.

  1. There are more specifics to get into to define what is expected from membership, features that members are entitled to and what is expected to become a member. I’ll work on these details shortly beyond what is already written in the attachments.

  1. Payment for everything will be handled ahead of time. There won’t be any payments at the specific events (i.e. Exhibition teams pay before any game is scheduled for them and individuals will have to pay ahead of time before they come out for any games).

Again, please “reply all” with any details from the meeting that you remember that haven’t been covered here.

Thanks,

Tom
